Countless millions of people love to wake up every morning with a hot cup of coffee. Are you among them? If so, you might have questions about how orthodontic treatment might impact your daily routine. Is it okay to drink coffee with Invisalign? The good news is that you will not have to give up your java. However, you might need to make some minor adjustments to how you consume it. This blog post provides tips that will prepare you to enjoy your pick-me-up without endangering your treatment.

Remove Your Aligners

You should always take your Invisalign aligners out of your mouth when you are drinking coffee because:

  • The dark color of your coffee might stain your aligners.
  • The coffee’s high temperature might warp your Invisalign, causing it to lose its shape and effectiveness.
  • The coffee, along with any cream and sugar in it, might sneak under your aligners and get trapped against your teeth. This could increase your risk of dental stains, cavities, and other problems.

Drink Your Coffee Quickly

Some people are in the habit of pouring their coffee into a thermos and sipping on it throughout the day. If that is true of you, you may need to make some adjustments during your Invisalign treatment. That is because frequently removing your aligners to sip on coffee could significant affect your total wear time. You might even end up falling short of the 20 – 22 hours that you should have Invisalign on your teeth each day.

It would be wise to drink your coffee at the same time that you eat breakfast. Do your best to finish it within 15 – 30 minutes.

Brush and Rinse after You Finish

When you finish your coffee, do not immediately place Invisalign back in your mouth. Rather, gently brush and floss your teeth. You should also give your aligners a thorough rinse. Sticking to good oral hygiene habits will prevent the sugar and acid in your coffee from clinging to your teeth or getting stuck in your aligners.

Cut Back on Sugar

Do you like to enhance your coffee with cream and sugar? Sweet coffee is delicious, but you should be cautious about how much of it you drink. You do not want the sugar to get trapped inside your aligners and cause decay. Try to take your coffee black or with a bit of unsweetened creamer, and only enjoy sweeter drinks on special occasions.

Invisalign will not prevent you from drinking coffee, but it might require you to adjust your morning routine. Use the tips in this article so you can enjoy your daily cup of Joe without endangering your teeth or your orthodontic treatment.
