TMJ disorder, which is sometimes called TMJ dysfunction, TMD, or even just TMJ, is a complex condition. It occurs when the jaw joint is injured or stressed, and it can cause a range of symptoms, including painful chewing, headaches, and more. Are you struggling with TMD? If so, you may have questions about your treatment options.

There is no “one size fits all” solution for TMD. In some cases, though, it is possible to correct TMJ disorder with Invisalign. This blog post explains how clear aligners might be able to reduce your pain and support your jaw health.

Malocclusion: A Possible Cause of TMD

TMD can have a number of different causes, but one of the most common culprits is malocclusion (also called a misaligned bite). If your top and bottom teeth do not fit together as they should, your jaw joint has to compensate for that misalignment. The continual efforts it is forced to make can strain it and the surrounding facial muscles, leading to symptoms of TMD.

There are several types of malocclusion, including:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Open bite
  • Crossbite

Correcting Malocclusion with Invisalign

When Invisalign first stepped onto the scene a few decades ago, it was regarded as little more than a cosmetic treatment. Today, though, the technology behind it has advanced to the point where it is capable of addressing many serious orthodontic issues. In fact, it is often used to correct malocclusion.

Invisalign’s aligners, along with special accessories, can work to realign both the teeth and the jaw. Over time, it can reduce the stress on your jaw joint, leading to a lessening of inflammation and greater muscle relaxation. Often, patients who undergo orthodontic care notice a significant improvement in their TMD symptoms.

Get Started on Treating TMD with Invisalign

If you are interested in finding out whether Invisalign could help your TMD, book a consultation with a local Invisalign provider. If they believe that clear aligners could help you, they will guide you through your upcoming treatment process.

On the other hand, if it seems like Invisalign may not be appropriate for your unique case, they can offer other suggestions that could help to reduce or eliminate your TMD symptoms. For example, some patients benefit greatly from at-home remedies, while others need surgery or other forms of professional intervention.

Invisalign may be able to do more than just straighten your teeth; it could free you from TMD! Your local dentist can help you determine whether it is a fit for you.
