How Can I Get Used to Eating with Dentures?

Happy group of senior friends eating with dentures

While you were in the process of getting dentures, you may have looked forward with eager anticipation as you thought about all the foods that you would soon be able to enjoy. However, when you got your dentures, you might have been surprised when you learned that eating with them is not as easy as you had hoped. What can you do to adjust to eating with dentures and start to enjoy a robust, widely varied diet? Here are some useful tips:

Start with Soft Foods

When you first start to wear your dentures, your gums may be a little sore. Consuming tough or chewy foods may just increase your discomfort. For at least the first few weeks with dentures, it would be wise to consume foods that require little to no chewing. Here are a few foods that are both delicious and easy to consume: applesauce, yogurt, scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, and smoothies.

Be Careful with Hot Foods

Upper dentures cover your palate and your gums, so they can limit your ability to feel the temperature of the foods you consume. If you eat something extremely hot, you might not realize right away that it has the potential to burn you. Testing food with your lips can help you accurately gauge whether something is cool enough to eat.

Distribute Food Evenly on Both Sides of Your Mouth

Traditional, non-implant dentures can become destabilized if too much pressure is placed on one side of them. You can reduce the risk that this uncomfortable occurrence will happen to you if you evenly distribute food between both sides of your mouth while you are chewing.

Bite Carefully

The tendency of dentures to become destabilized also means that you should not use their front teeth to bite into any hard or tough foods. For example, you should not bite into a whole apple. Instead, use a knife to cut off pieces of the apple, and move the food directly to your molars for chewing.

Drink Plenty of Liquids

Many foods — particularly starches and sticky foods — can cling to the chewing surfaces of both dentures and natural teeth. This can lead to debris accumulation and odors. Drinking plenty of water can rinse food particles off of your dentures and help you maintain a clean mouth. Keep in mind, though, that you should not hold hot liquid in your mouth for too long; it might loosen your dentures.

Call Your Dentist if You Need Help

Your dentist knows that adjusting to dentures can take a bit of time. They are ready to address your concerns and answer your questions, so do not hesitate to reach out to them if you need help. Hopefully, it will not be long before using your dentures is second nature to you.
