What Should You Do if Your Invisalign Aligner Does Not Fit?

Invisalign aligners are custom-made for each unique patient. They are designed to have a snug but comfortable fit on your teeth. But what should you do if your Invisalign aligner does not fit? This blog post touches on a few reasons why the problem may be occurring. It also provides practical suggestions to help you get your treatment back on track.

You Are Wearing a New Aligner

Problems with the way Invisalign fits are most common when a patient transitions to a new aligner. Since the aligner has not yet had any time to move your teeth, it can feel somewhat tight. It might even resist when you try to slide it onto your teeth. It might also pop out of place after it is placed in your mouth.

In most cases, it is easy to fix this issue. You can bite down on Invisalign chewies for 10 – 15 minutes. The chewies are soft plastic cylinders that are designed to help you place gentle pressure on your aligners. You can ask your dentist for some or order them online. They are also available at many stores that sell oral care supplies.

You Are Not Wearing Your Aligners Enough

In order to be effective, Invisalign aligners should be worn for 20 – 22 hours each day (the closer to 22 hours, the better). If you sometimes forget to wear them, your teeth may not be moving as quickly as predicted. Therefore, when you switch to a new aligner, it might refuse to slide onto your teeth.

If you suspect that inadequate aligner wear is to blame for fit problems with Invisalign, you might need to continue using your current aligner for a bit longer before you move forward with your treatment. Of course, you should call your dentist and inform them of the situation so they can offer personalized guidance.

There Is a Problem with Your Aligner

In rare cases, an aligner does not fit because it is damaged or there was an error in the manufacturing process. It is also possible that your overall treatment plan requires some minor revisions.

If there is something wrong with one of your aligners, inform your dentist. They can order a replacement for you or offer another effective solution.

Your Invisalign aligners should fit perfectly. If one of yours does not, use the suggestions above to resolve the problem.
