Veneers vs. Invisalign — How Should I Fix My Crooked Teeth?

Would you like to straighten your teeth? People with some degree of dental misalignment usually gravitate toward conventional orthodontic treatments, such as clear aligners, to treat their condition. Clear aligners are discreet and convenient — but did you know that for some patients, another option is available? Veneers present a viable method for disguising misalignment. This blog post discusses the difference between Invisalign and veneers when it comes to straightening teeth.

Invisalign

Invisalign corrects misalignment by applying gentle pressure to the teeth, gradually moving them over the course of several months. It can address most cases of mild to moderate misalignment. Patients tend to love that the aligners are removable, discreet, and comfortable. However, as with any treatment, Invisalign is not perfect. It can take over a year to achieve its final results, and it offers no aesthetic benefits beyond moving the teeth into their proper positions.

Veneers

Veneers are ultra-thin pieces of porcelain that a cosmetic dentist attaches to the fronts of teeth. They are custom made for each individual patient, and they look incredibly natural. In addition to hiding misalignment, they can also make your teeth look whiter, bigger, or like they are of a different shape altogether. They can even repair unsightly chips and cracks. Plus, the treatment typically takes just a few appointments over the course of a few weeks.

Which Is Better for Fixing Crooked Teeth?

Your dentist will be happy to help you decide which treatment best fits your circumstances. In general, Invisalign is best for misalignment that can adversely affect your oral health. It can address things that veneers cannot, such as significantly crooked teeth and poor bite alignment. Veneers, on the other hand, do not actually move the teeth, so their oral health benefits are limited. They are generally best for fixing very minor orthodontic issues, such as small gaps between the teeth or very slight crookedness.

Is It Possible to Get Veneers after Invisalign?

What if you would like to enjoy the transformative effects of veneers, but your dental misalignment is currently too severe for them to fix? Talk to your dentist. After your teeth are moved into their proper positions, you might qualify for veneers. They may be the perfect way to put the finishing touches on your new smile! Keep in mind, though, that after you receive veneers, you will have to get a new retainer to maintain the results of your Invisalign treatment.

Invisalign and veneers are both wonderful cosmetic dentistry options, but in most cases, they address quite different issues. Using these treatments or others, your dentist can help you achieve your ideal smile.
